Meet Our Company of the Week, Boulder BITS
The/Studio: Introduce yourself. Tell our readers a little bit about who you are!
Jesse: Hi, My name is Jesse Lawrence the CEO of Boulder BITS, a new startup studio in Boulder. Boulder BITS spins off several tech startups a year. Jesse focuses on three main factors: 1) inventing and (in)validating solutions to important problems, 2) team building and 3) funding.
The/Studio: What does Boulder BITS do?
Jesse: We identify 3 to 5 scalable and profitable business models. Those ideas are researched, developed, and tested. If the idea gets validated we form the teams, fund the company, and support the unique needs of that company.
The/Studio: What have you learned since starting Boulder BITS?
Jesse: Available co-founders are hard to find. Most entrepreneurs are passionately involved in their own projects. Of those that are not currently engaged, many are in burnout mode, grieving the loss of a failed startup. Others are traveling through Nepal or the Andes. It takes a lot of effort to find amazing entrepreneurs exactly when they’re ready to transition. It’s even harder to find the right entrepreneur for a specific project. It takes lots of patience.
Jesse: As the CEO of the company, I would say our team, the culture, and the level of transparency we aim to hold.
The/Studio: What are some of the greatest challenges you face with your business?
Jesse: The greatest challenges so far have been not having a deep network of people before starting the business. When I moved from Silicon Valley last summer I did some traveling with my family seeking to find the right balance of tech, a startup community, education, and ease of lifestyle. Boulder had it all, and has embraced my company with open arms – I meet amazing new people every day, so that challenge is getting more narrow by the day.
The/Studio: Where do you see your Boulder BITS in 10 years?
Jesse: In five to ten years we hope to have multiple successful exits and many active startups that improve people’s lives.
The/Studio: What type of legacy do you want to leave?
Jesse: One of service to our community, that was successful at bridging the gap in diversity and tech.
The/Studio: What is the story behind the custom product that you produced with The/Studio?
Jesse: My wife surprised me at Christmas with the patches.
The/Studio: How are you going to use the custom patches?
Jesse: The patches are for our promotional gear: computer bags, hats, and shirts. People love them.
The/Studio: Do you have any promotions you would like to offer our community?
Jesse: Right now we are working on some campaigns to expand diversity in the tech community. We will announce the details on our website, Facebook, and Twitter.
The/Studio: Do you have any upcoming events that our community members can attend?
Jesse: Yes, we will be involved with Boulder Startup Week in May, and will host our second PlaySpace event in June.
Thank you, Boulder BITS, for sharing your story with us! We wish you much success!
