Motorcycle jackets and patches go hand in hand. Here’s what you need to know about patches—and how to make your own.
If you ride motorcycles, chances are you’ll want a few patches to adorn your jackets, vests, and other gear. During our 10+ years in business, we’ve created thousands upon thousands of custom motorcycle patches for riders across the country and world. Some of our most loyal customers here at The/Studio are motorcycle enthusiasts, and we’ve created patches for hundred-member clubs, small groups, and individual riders.
So it’s safe to say that we know a thing or two about motorcycle patches, and in this post, we are hoping to share a bit of that knowledge with you!
Do You Have to Earn Your Patch?
With all due respect to our motorcyclist friends, this isn’t Sons of Anarchy. Unless you’re actually in a true one-percenter motorcycle club like the Hells Angels or Pagans, then you aren’t going to have to earn your patch. And if you are in one of those organizations, you probably aren’t going to be online designing patches. Those patches already exist.
So if you want custom biker patches for your club, riding group, or just for yourself, go ahead and create one! That being said, use common sense. If you don’t belong to a motorcycle club, please don’t create and wear that club’s patch. That is something you do have to earn, and stunting around pretending to be a member of an organization you’re not a part of is bad on two levels. For one, it’s a bit cringey. But also, it could attract the wrong kind of attention…
Creating a Custom Motorcycle Patch
This is the fun part. Like all custom patches, every personalized motorcycle patch starts with an idea. You might have your own artwork prepared, but if not, you can work with one of our in-house designers to create a unique design based on what you have in mind! Here are some things to keep in mind when designing your custom motorcycle patch.
- Most motorcycle patches are 9-12 inches in size (this is for the main back patch)
- These patches usually feature 100% embroidery coverage because of how big the patch is
- Using special options such as neon or metallic threading will make your patch really stand out
- Most motorcycle patches are sewn-on, so no backing is needed
- Top and bottom rockers (above and below the main patch) are essential to accent your back patch
- Don’t forget the smaller-sized patches that are worn on the front of your vest or jacket!
These are just some helpful tips that we have learned when creating custom motorcycle patches over the years, but these are custom patches, so feel free to design your patches however you like.
Remember, we offer dozens of design choices for patches, including seven different styles of custom patches (embroidered, PVC, woven, printed, chenille, bullion, and leather). We also offer the ability to modify your patches in TONS of ways, including the edges and border, patch shape, and optional upgrades, like button loops and reflective details.
With a low per-item price, great margins, and endless customizability, patches are one of our top-selling custom merch items! Even if you don’t want to attach them to your club gear, you can also hand them out at biker meet-ups to promote your biker apparel brand, for example. There’s a lot you can do with a well-made custom motorcycle patch.
