The/Studio: Introduce yourself. Tell our readers a little bit about who you are!
Terry: Golden Rescue is a not-for-profit organization that rescues and rehomes Golden Retrievers who have been surrendered, abandoned or abused. We’re one of Canada’s largest single breed rescue groups and we have rescued over 2,100 Goldens to-date.
The/Studio: That must be so rewarding! What does your organization do?
Terry: We give Golden Retrievers who enter our program a second chance at a happy life.
The/Studio: How wonderful! What have you learned since starting your organization?
Terry: There are many Golden angels in the world ~ people who volunteer their time with our organization and those who adopt a rescue. We have Goldens of all ages and they all find homes ~ whether they’re one year old or 13 years old.
The/Studio: That’s the perfect name for your volunteers. They are definitely angels. What about your organization are you most proud of?
Terry: Two things primarily ~ the spirit of the Golden Retriever (no matter how tough their past has been, they still learn to trust and love) and Golden Rescue’s fantastic volunteers (who are in operations, administration, fundraising or foster).
The/Studio: That is very touching. Dogs are amazing creatures. What are some of the greatest challenges you face with your organization?
Terry: Fundraising naturally. The majority of money necessary to help our Goldens goes towards veterinary care and on average, the cost for helping each Golden is around $1,700.
The/Studio: Your organization deserves all the money in the world! Where do you see your organization in 10 years?
Terry: Our wish for the future is that rescue organizations are no longer necessary; however, in all likelihood, the need for rescue groups is on the rise so we hope to keep doing what we’re doing with an increased number of supporters and donors.
The/Studio: What type of legacy do you want to leave?
Terry: It’s not really a ‘legacy’, but what we’d like to accomplish, besides helping any Golden who needs us, is to increase awareness of animal cruelty and of rescue groups and to help people understand the responsibilities of pet ownership.
The/Studio: In my opinion that is a legacy, a wonderful one! What is the story behind the custom product that you produced with The/Studio?
Terry: One of our volunteers is making vests for our Goldens in the foster system to advertise the fostering work that we do. During the design phase of these vests, we decided to include the words “I’m being fostered by” followed by the Golden Rescue logo, with the words “Heal. Foster. Adopt.” We did not have a sew-on patch with our logo that could be used and your company offered the quality we needed at the best price.
The/Studio: How are you going to use this custom patch?
Terry: The words “I’m being fostered by” will be applied to each side of the foster Golden vest using fabric paint, and the Golden Rescue logo patch will be sewn on each side and reflective tape will also be used to make our Goldens more visible in the dark.
The/Studio: Describe the custom product and what it means?
Terry: The patch is our organization’s logo: A Golden Retriever shown with a shadow (symbolizing its past) beside our organization’s name “Golden Rescue” with the words “Heal. Foster. Adopt.” on a black background. It fully encompasses the work that we do when we rescue a Golden – since they are rescued from many different situations from animal cruelty and puppy mills to a change in situation that no longer allows the family to care properly for the Golden. Fostering these Goldens allows us to better understand their individual needs and place them with adoptive families that can meet these needs.
The/Studio: Do you have any upcoming events that our community members can attend?
Terry: We have events all year long. Please visit our website (www.goldenrescue.ca) to see our Upcoming Events. Our biggest event is our annual picnic where many volunteers and their Goldens get together for a day of fun. Last year, we broke two Guinness World Records. On September 19, 2015, our annual picnic will be celebrating our 25th anniversary.
The/Studio: That’s awesome! Congratulations on breaking two Guinness World Records and on your upcoming anniversary. Is there anything our community members can do to help?
Terry: Get involved, foster, donate, help out at events, adopt, join a team…we would welcome your participation!
Golden Rescue is a very special organization. We are so honored to be able to share their story with you. Thank you Terry and Golden Rescue for the important work that you do.
