The first Girl Scout badge (or patch) dates back to 1912, in the early years of the Girl Scouts organization. The Girl Scouts of the United States of America was founded by Juliette Gordon Low, after she met Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts (Scouting), in 1911. Low believed that girls should learn skills and traits that would make them self-sufficient and independent, things like knot-tying, first aid, and fire starting.
Of course, each of these skills is accompanied by a custom Girl Scout badge representing the skill! You can only earn a girl scout badge by demonstrating a certain level of proficiency and knowledge in the given skill. The first Girl Scout handbook had a total of 27 proficiency badges, including Naturalist, Signaling, and Telegraphing. To earn the Signaling skill badge, for example, “girls had to send and receive a message in two of the following systems of signaling: semaphore and Morse code.” They were required to communicate no fewer than twenty-four letters a minute!
