If you’re wondering what a merrow or merrowed edge is… you’re in the right place. Let’s explain this custom patch design option.
Custom patches are our top-selling custom merch item at The/Studio, and we offer a veritable horde of different styles, special customization options, and add-ons when you make custom patches with us.
You can make embroidered patches, woven patches, printed patches, PVC patches, bullion patches, chenille patches, and even leather patches—and those are just the patch types! Once you get down into borders, backing, thread material, shape, special options, upgrades, and add-ons, you’ll find an ENDLESS amount of customization.
One problem with having so many customization options is that sometimes customers don’t even realize exactly how much creative freedom they have, particularly when it comes to patch borders and edges.
So, What is a Merrowed Edge?
One of the most common questions we get asked about borders & edges is “What is a merrow edge?” Merrowed edges are also commonly known as merrowed borders, and they’re an option we offer for the borders of our custom patches.
Merrowed edges are sealed with an overlock stitch in the color of your choice, and can only be used on regular shapes. If you want a heart-shaped patch or a star-shaped patch, for example, then you can’t use a merrowed border. But if you’re making a traditional circular patch, then merrowed borders are a great choice to give your patch a fine-tuned, “finished” look. They’ll also make your custom patch even studier, preventing any potential for fraying at the edges. Because of this, merrow edges are an extremely popular option for our customers.
How Do I Know if Merrowed Borders Will Work With My Patch?
Most patches using standard shapes, such as circles, round-edged squares, and so on, will work perfectly with a merrowed border. If you are unsure if your design can have a merrowed border added to it, don’t sweat. Our team of Creative Specialists can let you know if your design can have a merrowed border added to it or not.
If a merrowed border won’t work, our team will let you know what other options will work well with your design. We’ve made thousands upon thousands of patches for just as many clients, so we know a thing or two about what special options and border styles work best with which designs.
