The/Studio: Introduce yourself. Tell our readers a little bit about who you are!
Jamey: We are a women’s fashion boutique built on the mission to give back locally and globally. We started as one small store in Knoxville, TN 5 years ago and have grown to a nation-wide brand with more than 60 stores in 19 states.
The/Studio: Wow! Your business has grown fast in such a short amount of time! What does your business do?
Jamey: We provide our customers with everything from the latest trends in womens fashion apparel to the most sought after gifts and décor. We also pride ourselves on inspiring our customers through our unique, handcrafted store designs and exceptional retail experience. Altar’d State is a place of respite where you can escape from the stresses of daily life.
The/Studio: What a great name for a boutique! What have you learned since starting your business?
Jamey: At Altar’d State, we are true believers in the power of a dream. Altar’d State was born on the mission to give back and the dream to change the world. Since our doors first opened, that has been our goal and we wake up every morning with the drive to achieve it. In the past five years, keeping that dream as the power behind our company, has allowed us to achieve and grow further than we thought possible.
The/Studio: What about your business are you most proud of?
Jamey: Every store participates in what we call: “Mission Monday”, where we donate 10% of each Monday’s net proceeds to a local charity of the store’s choosing. The Altar’d State family reaches even further by clothing, educating, and feeding children in high-risk areas of Peru. Currently, Altar’d State sponsors 118 children in need. These sponsorships provide the children with a school uniform, two nutritious meals a day, tutoring, after-school care and counseling. To ensure a brighter future for these children, Altar’d State is funding a construction project to build a high school and social center in Cañete, Peru. To date, we have donated $1,277,525 to charitable missions. The give back mission is also radiating through the walls of every Altar’d State store. In our stores and online, we partner with and sell numerous brands sharing the give back spirit and we are proud to offer paid volunteer hours to our associates.
The/Studio: That is wonderful! What are some of the greatest challenges you face with your business?
Jamey: Adapting and accepting change. As we grew from a small one-store chain to a national brand, we had to make a lot of changes to our brand, structure and style. It was not always an easy smooth ride, but learning to quickly adapt to necessary changes as a team, allowed us to pave the way for a brighter future for the company and the Altar’d State brand.
The/Studio: Where do you see Altar’d State in 10 years?
Jamey: Based off of what we were able to accomplish in the last five years, the next ten years are going to be an exciting adventure for Altar’d State!
The/Studio: What type of legacy do you want to leave?
Jamey: Altar’d State is more than just a creative retail environment, we are on a mission to give back. We want to make a positive impact in the communities of which we are a part and help change lives for the better. We do more than provide fashionable apparel to young women who want to make a difference. We want to inspire a movement to Stand Out – For Good.
The/Studio: What is the story behind the custom product that you produced with The/Studio?
Jamey: Altar’d State places a large emphasis on properly training our employees. Each season, we provide our store associates with a new training manual to guide them through a successful quarter. For this manual, we wanted a custom made patch to place on the cover. We use The/Studio to produce a seasonal patch to match our seasonal store designs.
The/Studio: Do you have any upcoming events that our community members can attend?
Jamey: We are currently in the middle of our Semi-Annual Sale where customers can enjoy an extra percent off all of our summer sale items! We are also very excited about the launch of our brand new fall collection in late July.
The/Studio: How can our community members get involved with the charities Altar’d State supports?
Jamey: A portion of every sale is donated to various charitable missions. By shopping at Altar’d State, you are increasing the amount of charitable donations we send out each month and enhancing our efforts to stand out. For good.
Thank you Jamey for sharing your story with us. You have inspired us to “stand out. for good”
