Well, let’s start by tackling the elephant in the room, shall we? MOQ stands for Minimum Order Quantity. That’s the minimum number of products you’re required to order in order to produce a batch of custom merch. For example, a MOQ could be 10 custom hats, or it could be 100 custom hats.
When working with many custom merch manufacturers, you can’t place an order unless you order at least X amount of items (in other words, unless you meet their MOQ). As you can probably guess, that’s not a good thing.
Why It’s Important to Choose a Company with No MOQ
It’s important to work with a company with no MOQ because you want to be able to pay only for what you need. You don’t want to have to pay for an extra amount that you will never use. This is especially crucial if you’re a small business, or if ordering custom merch for a small club, organization, party, or family gathering. If you only have five or 10 members in your chess club, for example, you want to make sure you can order exactly the right number of custom merch products you need, without paying for extras that you don’t.
Finding a company with no MOQ can also be important even if you’re an established or larger retailer. One situation where that might be true is if you’re trying out a different merch item or different design.
Maybe you sell tons and tons of custom stickers and patches and are highly successful in that niche, but you want to try selling custom pins. So instead of needing to purchase a hundred or a thousand custom pins to fulfill an MOQ, you can safely order just a dozen, perhaps, and see how quickly and how well they sell. If they’re a hit, you can make a larger order in the future, and if they aren’t, you aren’t in the hole for hundreds or thousands of custom pins that didn’t sell well.
