Nasa x THE/STUDIO

1. Celebrating exploration through design
NASA is more than a space agency. It is a symbol of progress, discovery, and human achievement. Every mission, research milestone, and internal initiative carries deep meaning. To help tell those stories, NASA partnered with THE/STUDIO to create a collection of custom-made artifacts including embroidered patches, woven patches, soft enamel pins, and commemorative coins, each crafted to capture the spirit of the work behind them.
These items were designed for teams, programs, and recognition efforts, helping NASA honor accomplishments while building connection across its global network.
2. Honoring a breakthrough in aerospace
This custom embroidered patch was created for the X-59 Quiet Supersonic Flight Test. It features the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works branding, a graphic aircraft silhouette, and bold text stitched in white and orange. The structure of the patch reflects the precision and engineering behind the program itself.
Purpose: Produced for program leads, engineers, and aerospace teams working on the X-59 supersonic test aircraft.

3. Recognizing innovation on Earth and beyond
NASA commissioned a soft enamel pin for the Earth & Space Air Prize. The round pin features gold plating, orbital linework, and a stylized Earth topography design. Its glossy surface and secure butterfly clutch make it both collectible and functional.
Purpose: Distributed to participants, winners, and collaborators involved in the Air Prize program focused on sustainability and planetary observation.

4. Showcasing mission diversity and culture
NASA used a set of embroidered patches to represent different teams and stories. The black-background “meatball” patch carries NASA’s core identity. The NemaFlex Muscle Experiment patch, designed for a biology experiment aboard the International Space Station, features a rocket wrapped by a nematode. The rectangular red “worm” logo patch offers a minimalist alternative for uniform branding.
Purpose: These embroidered patches were used across uniforms, flight jackets, lab gear, and event kits to reflect mission goals and identity. division while remaining part of a cohesive collection.

5. Connecting people through visual identity
NASA’s In-Space Manufacturing (ISM) team received a custom woven patch for their Refabricator project, which focused on recycling and 3D printing in orbit. The design includes an astronaut and toolkit imagery within a triangular shape. Alongside it, the embroidered worm logo patch is shown worn on apparel, demonstrating everyday application for employee swag and outreach programs.
Purpose: These patches help visualize cutting-edge research and make internal initiatives more tangible for both teams and external collaborators.

6. Commemorating with lasting symbols
NASA’s iconic “meatball” emblem was also produced as a commemorative coin. Cast in silver-toned metal with enamel detailing and a textured border, the coin features NASA’s full agency name on the front. The reverse side includes safety culture values embedded in a DNA strand layout.
Purpose: Given as an internal recognition coin for safety programs, engineering achievements, and employee appreciation across departments.
7. Turning stories into physical artifacts
Every patch, pin, and coin created for NASA was designed with purpose. Whether to celebrate engineering breakthroughs, build team pride, or support public engagement, each item told part of NASA’s ongoing mission in a physical form.
With THE/STUDIO, NASA received
